MOREnet Upgrades Backbone and Internet Connections

In early January 2007, MOREnet will be upgrading the bandwidth for the backbone circuits that carry information around the state. MOREnet will also be increasing the bandwidth of its connection to the Internet in the spring of 2007.

MOREnet’s backbone connects Columbia, Kansas City, Springfield, St. Louis and Jefferson City as shown in the diagram below.

The backbone is designed so that if any one circuit goes down, traffic can be rerouted over another backbone circuit. Currently, the six backbone circuits are OC-12 circuits, which mean they each have a bandwidth capacity of 622 Megabits per second (Mbps). These will be upgraded to gigabit (1,000 Mbps) circuits, for an increase of over 60 percent. The increased bandwidth ensures that MOREnet’s backbone network will be able to manage the ever increasing data and video intrastate traffic. 

Currently MOREnet has two OC-12 connections to the public Internet in both St. Louis and Kansas City. In the spring of 2007, MOREnet will upgrade the four OC-12 connections with four OC-48 connections. This upgrade provides sufficient redundant capacity in both St. Louis and Kansas City  to handle all member Internet traffic even if one of the Internet connections experiences an outage.
