About Columbia
Columbia, Mo., is a suburban college town of approximately 126,700 people (total metro area), home to two private colleges, as well as the University of Missouri. Located in the center of the state, is a cultural hub between St. Louis and Kansas City. Columbia is a clean, pleasant Midwestern town with a high standard of living and a low unemployment rate of 1.2 percent. The Columbia Public School System has received high ratings on the state and national levels for educational excellence. For this and other reasons, Columbia consistently has been rated by Money Magazine as one of the best 50 places to live in the country, recently rising as high as second.
Columbia caters to its large student and faculty populations, providing an unusual number of cultural activities for a town of its size. These include the University Concert Series and the Missouri Symphony Society, which bring top classical musicians to Columbia. The local clubs cater to more casual music, including jazz, blues and alternative groups. There are also a number of local theaters and many coffeehouses available to complete one's night on the town. Other recreational opportunities include visiting a nearby state park (such as Rock Bridge and Finger Lakes State Parks) or biking or hiking on the popular Katy Trail.
