C021: Securing Public Access Computers

Public libraries have special security problems. The Hannibal Free Public Library strives to provide Internet and software access to patrons of all ages. We allow Internet e-mail access and instant messaging. We filter, but when asked by an adult, we remove the filter. The public access computers are secured by Fortres and Symantec Corporate Edition. When "stuff happens," the computer is restored by Cornerstone after a reboot! Compuguard Control Center is the remote management software that works with Cornerstone. These software solutions have cut maintenance and increased uptime. Compuguard has also provided updating in disabled state and auto shutdowns for eight hours (saving energy and money)--then wake on LAN in the morning.

Learning the politics, processes and people of a school takes time. This presentation will help first-year and beginning technical directors know what to expect and offer some suggestions on how to be ready for whatever someone will bring to you next.
C023: Safely Securing the District with Wireless Access

We will demonstrate how to secure the wireless campus while allowing public access. We will also explore avenues to allow wireless access with security for faculty, administrators and students, while allowing public guest access. We will also learn how to protect the network from unwanted wireless access points that could be introduced by third parties.

Analyze Internet and network resources, data cleansing, training, system management and what district processes will change by having a centralized database.

As the web continues its rapid expansion, the way people surf and the technology they use to surf continues to evolve as well. As new technologies become standards, they may change the way websites are viewed. This can have disastrous consequences for your website if you are not prepared. This one hour informational session explains web accessibility standards and why they are important for you. Whether you are trying to make your site work better for viewing by people with disabilities or trying to get your site to make sense in a cell phone browser, knowing these standards and how to work around some of the issues facing the ever-evolving web will help you make more informed design and maintenance decisions about your website.

During this session, we will learn about: disaster recovery planning versus business continuity planning, the seven tiers of disaster recovery, the steps in developing a disaster recovery plan, events that necessitate disaster recovery and real-life experiences with disasters. Attendees will learn about the disaster recovery planning processes as well as challenges that organizations face on a daily basis. In addition I will share some real life experiences that I have had regarding disasters from my previous experience as Director of Technology at Rolla Public Schools, as a consultant and as an employee of City Utilities of Springfield.
C027: Advanced CSS Workshop (2HOURS)

This session presents a hands-on opportunity to play with some advanced CSS concepts. Bring your laptops and an open mind. We'll cover many of the current hot design techniques: multi-column layout, faux-column layout, advanced image replacement techniques, advanced list manipulation, rounded corner boxes, son-of-suckerfish dropdowns, cross-column pull-outs, CSS hacks and customized CSS for alternate devices. There will also be a discussion of emulators for alternate delves and a discussion about helpful tools for web developers. Example files that can be manipulated during the workshop will be made available for the session. Final example files will be available at the end of the workshop. This workshop assumes a basic understanding of CSS and XHTML principles.
