C051: Open Source Software and the Small Library
Presenter(s): John Pace, Webster County Library
Level: Intermediate
Track: Public Access Computing/Network Administration
During this session we will show how a small library (or any library or organization) can benefit from using open source software to help secure their network and help with Children's Internet Protection Act ( CIPA) compliance. IPCop and CensorNet are both open source solutions that handle my firewall and content filtering needs. Even though both of these products are Linux based, an in-depth knowledge of Linux is not required; you can teach yourself as you work through the process of researching, installing and configuring them--I did!

C053: Disabling peer-to-peer: should you? Yes, here’s how.
Presenter(s): Karl Lutzen, Missouri S&T (Formerly UMR)
Level: Intermediate
Track: Technology Support & Implementation
Disabling peer-to-peer (P2P) on your network has both advantages and disadvantages. Bandwidth and DMCA's can be controlled, but many applications require protocols like BitTorrent to perform updates, and of course, there are those users who must have their P2P. The political decisions as well as deciding on the correct technical controls are addressed in this presentation. Attendees will get a detailed view of what the University of Missouri - Rolla (now Missouri S&T) went through when making this difficult decision as well as the rather unique solution we developed.
