H011: More on Free Web 2.0 Applications

Presenter(s): Savitri Wilder, University of Central Missouri

Level: Beginner

Track: Teaching and Learning with Technology

You've heard of blogs, wikis, social networking and Open Office, but do you know how to incorporate them or other applications like Flickr, Meebo, Slideshare, del.icio.us and more to make your class more interactive? There is so much information out there, and technology is growing and evolving every day. In this session I will demonstrate how I have used free Web 2.0 applications daily to help me become more interactive in my teaching and work environment.

H012: Relationship-Focus for IT Strategic Planning

Presenter(s): Austin Winkleman and John Ashby, Saint Louis University

Level: Beginner

Track: Administration and Leadership

The development of SLU’s university-wide IT strategic plan required specific tools, techniques, questions and disciplines throughout a broadly representative process. The resulting plan consists of five easily remembered themes of relationships, relationships, relationships, decision-making and future orientation. Learn about the formation, development and results of the planning effort. A successful strategic planning effort of IT across the institution (not just the ITS division) must move beyond viewing ITS as providing a service, to viewing ITS as a partner and enabler of the institution's goals.

H013: Active Desktop, Gadgets and LaunchPad: Internal Audience Interfaces

Presenter(s): Grayson Gordon, Missouri State University/West Plains

Level: Beginner

Track: Web Design and Development

As Web developers we are constantly focused on the external window into the university. See how small simple steps can be taken to provide quick access to many of the resources that students, faculty and staff use on a daily basis. See how we've incorporated the Active Desktop on student access stations providing them with one-click access to Blackboard, e-mail, library resources, etc. We will also examine the Banner LaunchPad created to give similar one-click access to faculty and staff to the Banner administrative system. Finally, we will discuss the challenges that Vista has imposed by abandoning Active Desktop. Our solution may be Gadgets.

H014: Do-It-Yourself Websites With Microsoft SharePoint

Presenter(s): Liyan Liao and Todd Kuhns, Truman State University

Level: Intermediate

Track: Web Design and Development

Turn website design and maintenance over to your customers. Learn how web-based SharePoint software (free with Windows Server 2003) can empower your faculty, staff and campus groups to easily create and maintain their own feature-filled sites—without any HTML or Web programming knowledge. You'll save time when users can add and manage built-in calendars, wikis, blogging tools, shared document space, images and more by themselves. We'll walk you through a basic setup and discuss its features, benefits and limitations to help you decide if it's right for your school.

H015: Interactivity and Engagement in a Blended Class: Wimba Live Classroom

Presenter(s): Robert Keel, UMSL/Dept of Sociology

Level: Intermediate

Track: Teaching and Learning with Technology

See how Wimba "Live Classroom" promotes student communication, collaboration and engagement in a unique "blended classroom" model that combines day and evening students (co-present for class sessions), online students (live at remote location for class sessions) and students that participate asynchronously. I will present student data documenting use and perceptions of "Live Classroom" and other software (wikis and social bookmarking), focusing on their utility for enhancing the classroom experience for all learners. Learn how collaborative software can be used in larger survey and smaller seminar-style classes to increase interaction and enhance learning.

H018: Do you know what your students and staff are searching for on the Internet? We do!

Presenter(s): Andy McBride and Patrick Chapa, Lightspeed Systems (VENDOR)

Level: Intermediate

Track: Security, Networking and Infrastructure

When developing a cyber security plan, IT directors need to armor their networks with a multi-dimensional shield, which means seeing all that is going in and out of your network—viruses, content, e-mail and more. Built specifically for securing educational networks and protecting millions of students nationwide, Total Traffic Control gives you a single admin console to see everything running on your network and control any detected issues. Join us as we demonstrate how you can control everything, see everything and better protect your network.

H019: Credibility and the Future of Textbooks

Presenter(s): Dr. Dwight Allen (Keynote Speaker)

Are all textbooks printed today credible? Moreover, what does credibility really mean and who makes that determination? This session will focus on the topic of credibility and critical thinking skills and what future options are on the horizon for textbook creation and utilization.
