H021: Online Instructional Tools: Application for a Large Engineering Course

Scaffolding problem-solving skills is a challenging task because it requires a carefully structured process in which the complexity of the concepts introduced in the problems are adapted to the individual learning characteristics of the students—a significant challenge when teaching a large group of sophomores/juniors with diverse learning needs. To better address student needs, I used online conferencing software to provide support for both the lectures and the office-hour sessions.

An insufficient response can also have serious consequences for an organization involved in litigation. Learn about some of the meaures that can be taken to prepare your organization to respond accurately and efficiently to such requests.

H023: The Server's Down? Nobody Told Me

With today's dependence on computer systems, it is imperative that system administrators be aware of host aand service outages as soon as possible. Nagios is an open-source application that has the capability to monitor nearly any host or service on your network and notify the appropriate personnel of problems in a variety of ways (e-mail, SMS, pager, etc.) Its Web interface provides a dashboard for viewing the current status of hosts and services and the ability to acknowledge problems or schedule downtime to suppress notifications. In this presentation, I will walk through Nagios' architecture, how to configure it to monitor a variety of network hosts and services and touch on some of its advanced features that can help reduce downtime.

H024: Advanced CSS Workshop (2 HOURS)

A hands-on opportunity to play with some advanced CSS concepts. Bring your laptops and an open mind. We'll cover many of the current hot design techniques: multi-column layout, faux-column layout, advanced image replacement techniques, advanced list manipulation, rounded corner boxes, son-of-Suckerfish dropdowns, cross-column pull-outs, CSS hacks and customized CSS for alternate devices. We’ll discuss emulators for alternate delves and a discussion about helpful tools for Web developers. Example files will be made available for the session that can be manipulated during the workshop. Final example files will be available at the end of the workshop. This workshop assumes a basic understanding of CSS and XHTML principles.

H025: Dealing with Cheating and Plagiarism in Online Classes

In addition I will share some real-life experiences that I have had regarding disasters from my previous experience as Director of Technology at Rolla Public Schools, as a consultant, and as an employee of City Utilities of Springfield.
