H031: Making the Decision: Blackboard or Moodle
Presenter(s): Barry Bookout, Todd Phillips and Chad Baldwin, East Central College
Level: Beginner
Track: Teaching and Learning with Technology
East Central College needs to move its online course Learning Management System from a consortium host to an on-campus server. The consortium server uses WebCT 4.1. The campus server will run Blackboard CE 6.0 or Moodle, an open-source LMS. We’ll describe the decision-making process: what constituencies were involved, what criteria were important, how each candidate LMS was rated and what the final decision was. We will also present a status report on the installation, conversion and integration process.
H032: Publications for Public Relations
Presenter(s): Matthew Stublefield, Missouri State University
Level: Beginner
Track: Administration and Leadership
Our jobs are not limited to providing the best computer service we can; we must also specialize in presentation and communication to our clients, be they students, faculty, staff or people outside the university setting. Documents crafted solely for public relations often fall short of communicating our goals and desires, but indirect and informational newsletters and articles in combination with succinct and clear websites can have an incredible impact on public perception of your department, funding and morale. I will review the importance of improving your department's image and communicating your values, and I will highlight positive ways to get your message heard by everyone.
H033: Top 10 Threats to Information Security

We will address the top 10 threats to information security as they relate to educational institutions. Learn about why these threats exist and the dangers they pose from a strategic, operational and technical view, as well as solutions and resources for protecting against them.
H035: Podcasting-Why and How to Get Faculty to Use this Pedagocical Tool
Presenter(s): Diane Richmond, SunGard Higher Education/Truman State University
Level: Intermediate
Track: Teaching and Learning with Technology
Podcasting has moved from "hot new buzzword" to an important pedagogical tool. After reviewing the 2007 Horizon Report, it seems clear that today's students are looking for more technology-infused options to meet their own individual learning styles. There are dozens of arguments why podcasting is an effective tool that faculty should be taking advantage of. But after the why is the HOW! Learn what hardware, software and steps are necessary to post an audio or video podcast.
H038: Enhanced Teaching and Learning With 21st Century Online Tools
Presenter(s): Karen Montgomery, AT&T (VENDOR)
Level: Intermediate
Track: Teaching and Learning with Technology
Colleges and universities are faced with the challenge of addressing the multimedia learning expectations of a cohort of young adults who arrive online and on campus as accomplished multi-taskers, accustomed to using text messaging, instant messaging, cell phones and e-mail while simultaneously searching the World Wide Web and watching television. Web 2.0 tools and technologies can provide a variety of options for both instructors and learners to create content, interact, gather information and assess the learning process and are likely to increase student motivation as faculty make the switch from time-honored lectures to technology integrated instruction.
