H051: Not Free for the Taking: Understanding Copyright and Fair Use Online
Presenter(s): Laura Foley and Marcie McGuire, University of Missouri/Columbia
Level: Beginner
Track: Teaching and Learning with Technology
Too many students—and even educators—assume that if information is presented online, it is freely available to copy and redistribute without permission or attribution. Learn how to determine whether information or images are in the public domain, what Creative Commons licensing means, whether use of digital information meets “fair use” guidelines and how to credit information from online resources.

H053: Disabling peer-to-peer: should you? Yes, here’s how.
Presenter(s): Karl Lutzen, Missouri S&T (Formerly UMR)
Level: Intermediate
Track: Security, Networking and Infrastructure
Disabling peer-to-peer (P2P) on your network has both advantages and disadvantages. Bandwidth and DMCAs can be controlled, but many applications require protocols like BitTorrent to perform updates, and of course, there are those users who must have their P2P. The political decisions as well as deciding on the correct technical controls are addressed in this presentation. Attendees will get a detailed view of what the University of Missouri - Rolla (now Missouri S&T) went through when making this difficult decision as well as the rather unique solution we developed.
H054: Database Change History
Presenter(s): Brian Edmond and Greg Snider, Missouri State University
Level: Advanced
Track: Networking & Infrastructure
Database systems, by design, are subject to constant changes that are usually lost once a transaction is complete. End users are sometimes left wondering about the details of a particular transaction: Who performed a change? When? Using what program or process? Here, we describe a change history process to capture database transactions for perpetuity. This system captures system key, date, time, job, user, program, table, column and "before" and "after" values involved in every update, as well as recording basic information for a row insert or delete. The intended purpose of the system was to allow detailed database or application troubleshooting by the user community. However, other important uses are also noted.
H055: Online Applets: Alternative Distance Education Activities for the Online Classroom
Presenter(s): Carolyn Snodgrass, Ozarks Tech Community College
Level: Intermediate
Track: Teaching and Learning with Technology
Current online classroom pedagogy calls for activities that address more student learning styles than the traditional text-heavy online environment. This presentation addresses free interactive online games or manipulatives that are available for public use. Many of them are useful to enrich the educational online lesson plan. During this session we will visit example sites and discuss how to evaluate them for virtual classroom use.

H059: Imagine the Real in the Virtual: Experience Your Second Life
Presenter(s): Bryan Carter, University of Central Missouri
Level: Intermediate
Track: Teaching and Learning with Technology
Imagine a learning environment where you can go anywhere, do anything and interact with others in ways never before possible in more traditional distance education settings. Learners can visit such places as gothic cathedrals, cities, museums, libraries, places too dangerous or impossible to go in real life. This three dimensional world exists, created by its residents who are physically located around the world. Second Life has the potential to revolutionize distance education and online virtual communities.
