Connections 2007: Sessions
Friday, 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
C070. Dealing with IT Consultants
Presenter: Ken Barnes, MOREnet
Track: Technology Support and Implementation
In this presentation you will learn when you need a consultant,
as well as how to look for and get the most out of a consultant, and most importantly,
how to avoid calling one in the first place. Emphasis is placed on documenting
the network, not only for a consultant’s use, but also in the event the
administrator is unavailable. This presentation is geared for technical
coordinators, technical managers, and those responsible for administering and
maintaining the network on a daily basis.
C071. MoDLA on the Move
Presenters: Kristi Smalley, University of Missouri – Columbia; Eric Nicklas, MOREnet; J. Scott Christianson, Kaleidoscope Consulting
Track: Technology Support and Implementation
The Missouri Distance Learning Association has been an advocate and resource for distance learning in Missouri since 1998. In this presentation, several members of the current MoDLA board of directors will discuss the organization's evolving mission and programs. Information about recent MoDLA initiatives and changes to the MoDLA organization will be discussed. This will be an open discussion with a chance for all participants to provide feedback to MoDLA about its priorities and services. A preview of the 2007 MoDLA conference will be provided as well.
C072. Technology Techs: The Sequel
Presenter: Ron Spicer, Affton School District
Track: Planning and Budgeting
Most school districts employ technicians to support their
technology, yet you would be hard-pressed to find two technicians who share
the same job description and responsibilities or two districts who deploy their
technicians in similar roles. Join us for a dialogue on the various roles technology
technicians play, and come share your own successes and challenges. We'll share
data from districts of all sizes, including job descriptions, compensation
and certifications. (Note: This presentation is an updated version of last
year's "Technology Technicians: Stepping on a Balloon" session.)
C076. Securing Linux
Presenters: Randy Raw and Eric Anderson, MOREnet
Track: Public Access Computing
This session will show you the best practices of securing/hardening Linux-based computers. We will look at several different avenues for securing your systems to keep hackers at bay, but still provide your users with access to the data resources that they need.
C077. Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES) Version 2 (Vendor)
Presenter: Mark Miltenberger, Novell
Track: Network Administration
This session will be a technical overview of all that is new
with OES V2. Slated for release in June 2007, OES V2 is the next generation
network operating system for providing network file, print, directory, authentication
services and other advanced networking solutions such as iFolder, iPrint, clustering,
and AMP applications. Building upon the capabilities of OES V1, OES V2 now
adds additional capabilities such as Virtualized NetWare, DFS, Shadow Volumes,
Directory-based DNS and DHCP, improved Windows coexistence, new clients,
updated services and new migration tools.
