Connections 2007: Sessions

Thursday, 11 a.m. – Noon

C009. An Intro to High-Def Videoconferencing

Presenter: J. Scott Christianson, Kaleidoscope Videoconferencing
Track: Technology Support and Implementation

High-Definition Videoconferencing has only been commercially available for a little over a year, yet the demand for this equipment is exceeding all industry expectations. High-Definition Videoconferencing offers crystal-clear audio and video in a widescreen format (16x9). The ability to offer such clarity for both video and content in the classroom removes many of the limitations experienced with standard videoconferencing systems.

This presentation will review the current state of High-Definition Videoconferencing and compare the various High-Definition systems that are currently on the market. Strategies for making the transition to High-Definition Videoconferencing will be presented and interoperability concerns will be discussed. A High-Definition system will be demonstrated and tested at various call speeds and with various inputs. Handouts will provide vendor-neutral reviews and comparisons of the available systems.

C010. Network Security and Cisco’s Clean Access

Presenter: David Stock, Westminster College
Track: Network Administration

Presentation will include security and support benefits of using a Network Authentication system and implementation lessons learned while working with Cisco's NAC solution (formerly known as Clean Access or Perfigo).

C011. Wireless Terms for Public Librarians

Presenter: Greg Wheeling, MOREnet
Track: Public Access Computing

Several public libraries are considering implementing wireless but perhaps feel confused at times as to what the current wireless terminology and standards really mean. This session will focus on some of the more common terminologies associated with wireless technology. A better understanding of wireless terminologies should equate to a heightened knowledge of what each respective piece of wireless equipment can do, and assist you in your decision-making prior to purchasing equipment.

C012. 10 Scripts That Will Make Your Life Easy

Presenters: Brett Bartrum and Andrea Schremp, Wright City R-II
Track: Network Administration

This seminar will review 10 detailed scripts that will better help you manage your network. You will learn how to automate tasks such as printer installs, user tracking, drive mapping, application installs, and much more. You will get printouts of every script we go over and information on how to make those scripts work in your environment. We will also go over different types of scripting, such as WMI/VBS, batch file scripting, Auto-IT and KiXtart.

C013. Managing Network Technology Inventories

Presenter: Bob Martin, MOREnet
Track: Technology Support and Implementation

Congratulations! You have just been put in charge of the network and technology for your job! Now what? Creating and managing your network technology inventory should be top priority. This informational session looks at one of the most important and often overlooked aspects of managing technology: gathering and maintaining the information critical to making your job easier and more efficient. Topics discussed will include creating a technology inventory, building physical and logical network diagrams and ways to manage hardware and software upgrades.

C015. Linux for Thin Clients, Hybrids and More

Presenters: Richard Nelson and Terry Azevedo, Mountain Grove R-III
Track: Network Administration

Come learn how using Linux, Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) and Virtual Machine (VM) technologies provide a three-tiered approach for service.

C016. Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit

Presenter: Travis Reddick, MOREnet
Track: Public Access Computing

The Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit offers technical staff an alternative way to efficiently secure public access computers in libraries and schools. In this session, we will highlight the benefits of this toolkit, including its ability to allow the administrator to restrict access to system settings and data and to control what a user can access. The toolkit can also be configured to restore computers to a preconfigured image through a simple reboot without losing Microsoft and antivirus update and maintenance changes.

C017. Social Networking: I Know What You Did

Presenter: Beth Young, MOREnet
Track: Technology Support and Implementation

Do you know what your children, your students or your co-workers are posting on social networking sites like MySpace.com and Facebook.com? You'd probably be surprised. We were!! Join us as we discuss different ways to find information and take a look at what's out there. We'll also go over some best practices like how to secure profiles from casual users and little things you don't want to post that can be pieced together to give away your location.

C018. Identity-Based Access Control (Vendor)

Presenter: Dan Parker, Data Technique, Inc.
Track: Network Administration

How would you like to be able to respond to a teacher’s request to make it impossible for a student of his/her class to get wireless access from the classroom next Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. during an upcoming exam? A system capable of controlling that access in such a granular way would have to know who the students were, be able to authenticate them before giving them network access, and be able to accept a rule to do this blocking of access. Or how would you like to offer limited bandwidth to students, while offering full bandwidth to staff and faculty? The necessary ingredients to accomplish this and many other “cool” solutions are: Identity Management, 802.1x authentication protocols and some specialized know-how. This presentation brings it all together, especially for all of the schools considering offering wireless access and wanting to control that access.
