Connections 2007: Sessions
Thursday, 2 – 3 p.m.
C019. Installing Moodle from Scratch
Presenters: Barry Bookout and Chad Baldwin, East Central College
Track: Technology Support and Implementation
This presentation will demonstrate the process of installing and configuring the open source learning management system Moodle on a fresh Linux server installation. The process will include installing prerequisite packages, installing Moodle and configuring the server. Student enrollment and authentication options will be discussed, along with the prospects for automated bulk course creation. Configuration topics will include roles and permissions, LDAP settings, security options and site appearance. We will also cover the installation of third-party modules.
C020. Just One Click and They’re Fixed! (2-hour session)
Presenter: Bruce Arnold, McDonald County Library
Track: Public Access Computing
Public Access computers can be improved dramatically by keeping them in prime condition through the process of “restoring” the C: drive regularly, but the technical knowledge necessary to do this quickly and easily is not readily available. This session will fully explain the steps and software necessary to make it simple for non-technical library staff (and even patrons, if you choose) to “fix” (restore) a computer’s software/Windows installation, returning it to perfect operating condition in just a few short minutes. The process can be made fully automatic using the commercial Symantec/Norton Ghost solutions, or “mostly” automatic using similar shareware products that cost little or nothing to use.
As a benefit of this technique, it is also possible to “clone” a
computer’s setup to another computer that has identical hardware, saving
you many hours in labor when deploying several new computers at once. You simply
set up one computer “perfectly” (test
the computer to be sure) and then copy the hard drive from the first computer
to all the others. (Yes, it’s legal as long as your software licenses
are in order!) This class explains how it’s done from start to finish.
Although these techniques work best for public access computers, where all (or most) of the computers are exactly alike, it can also be applied to any PC/notebook running Windows or Linux, including staff or even home PCs. Once you’ve mastered the art of PC hard drive cloning, you’ll wonder how you ever got by without it! The time and labor cost savings add up exponentially with the more computers that use the technique.
C021. Troubleshooting WAN – Part 1: A Member's Guide to Reliable Connectivity
Presenters: David Hemmann and John Bartin, MOREnet
Track: Technology Support and Implementation
Internet connectivity has become an important resource for
MOREnet members, so learning what you can do on-site to help bring a downed
circuit back to life is vital. Learn the basics of the Telco troubleshooting
process and how you can provide MOREnet technicians with information that can
help isolate the reason for an outage. Discussions will range from Telco
hardware nomenclature to descriptions of the various protocols used in MOREnet’s WAN connections. Gain an overview of the MOREnet network to see why some
outages are local problems and some can be regional in scope. Lastly,
learn how MyMOREnet can help troubleshoot both LAN and WAN connections.
C022. Technical Components of Online Resources
Presenter: Bob Martin, MOREnet
Track: Technology Support and Implementation
As part of your membership with MOREnet, you have access to
several online resources such as EBSCOhost, NewsBank and Annenberg Media at
no additional cost. The key to successful use of this wealth of resources lies
in understanding the technical requirements necessary for using these resources
to their fullest extent. Topics discussed in this session will include what
players and plug-ins are necessary to use features of these online resources,
as well as different ways to provide remote access to these resources for your
faculty, staff, patrons and students.
C023. Security Awareness – Let’s Get Started!
Presenter: Patti Dudenhoeffer, MOREnet
Track: Network Administration
During the month of April and in conjunction with National Cyber Security Day, MOREnet Security will be sponsoring activities that help promote cyber security awareness. This session will highlight some of those activities and also include an informal “how to get things started, keep things going and what works and what doesn’t work” discussion concerning security awareness. Information on available resources and samples of handouts that can be used for security awareness activities will also be provided.
C024. Linux Network Domain Authentication
Presenter: Brad Jones, Wentzville R-IV
Track: Network Administration
This presentation will cover setting up an Enterprise Level
network using Linux servers and Microsoft workstations. This course will use
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and the configuration files used here should be
compatible with other distributions of Linux.
C025. Research Roundtable
Presenter: Ben Colley, MOREnet
Track: Technology Support and Implementation
What are the technologies you are considering for deployment, looking into
or wish you had time to look into? Join this discussion group to talk about
new technologies, where they fit into your plans and help MOREnet understand
your needs.
C026. Session Border Controller for VoIP
Presenter: Richard Altheide, University of Missouri – Rolla
Track: Technology Support and Implementation
One of the greatest security risks in the deployment of a VoIP system is allowing the VoIP phones access to the Internet for connection to external service. Firewall implementations are complicated and generally open the VoIP phones to external attacks. These issues can be addressed by implementing a Session Border Controller through which all external VoIP network traffic is routed. The implementation example used in this presentation is the Cisco 2800 Integrated Services Router with the IP-IP Gateway software feature.
C027. Light or Heavy Access Points (Vendor)
Presenter: Glenn Thompson, ProCurve Networking by HP
Track: Network Administration
Learn the differences between "heavy" and "light" access points. Topics covered include management, features, security, and pros and cons of each solution.
