H060. Polycom HD Videoconferencing (Vendor)

Presenter: Greg Niemeyer, Polycom
Track: Technology Support and Implementation

Demonstration and discussion of High-Definition videoconferencing. This session will include discussions regarding the future of videoconferencing to include HD videoconferencing, multipoint HD conferencing and recording of HD conferences.

This presentation explores the new features of Microsoft Windows Vista and applies these features to the needs of the classroom. There will be a discussion of teaching techniques, security concerns and classroom management issues.

H062. Implementing a Content Management System – A Practical Guide

Considering implementation of a content management system? This product-independent session will discuss how the process transpired at Missouri State University, including gaining administration buy-in, formation of committees, CMS product research, purchase and implementation, necessary timelines, staffing, user training, rollout, post-implementation benefits gained and the work that remains.

H063. Adventures in High-End Video Webcasting

As educational institutions continue to adopt video streaming as a cost-effective way of distributing educational content, special presentations and live video teleconferences, the complexity of technical support becomes very challenging. This session will review adventures in supporting remote multiple cameras, mixed media and computer generated graphics in a video production with video streaming support. Lessons learned and the search to keep the complex media attainable, yet simplify the setup process and still keep the quality high, will be discussed. A diagram of process will be explained and a product that has helped us attain our goals and offers a possible alternative for controlling video classrooms in the future will be demonstrated. It’s all in the black box--lets look and see what's inside!

H064. Virtualization: Using VMWare and SAN Technology for Data Center Flexibility and Disaster Recovery

Presenter: Matt Nelson, Maryville University of St. Louis

Storage area networks and server virtualization are the hottest topics and latest technologies today. Maryville University has leveraged these technologies to address some of the biggest concerns in the data center: redundancy, high availability, disaster recovery and cost savings. We will discuss the advantages, disadvantages, triumphs, pitfalls and costs of moving to a virtual world and the unique opportunities it provides. We will share some unexpected benefits to our backup system, disaster preparedness and our bottom line. We will describe how and why we chose virtualization and how it can help you too.

H065. Intranet Collaboration Using SharePoint

Presenters: Richard Schumacher and Dr. Craig Klimczak, St. Louis Community College

Continuous improvement is an essential ingredient in the development and enhancement of self-service intranet solutions for information access, document and knowledge management, effective organizational communications, deployment of collaborative electronic workspaces, support of collaborative activities and workflows, transition to electronic forms and presentation of leadership-friendly key performance indicators. St. Louis Community College is re-engineering its intranet infrastructure (which used a combination of traditional Web and SharePoint Portal technology) based on lessons learned, industry best practices and evolving organizational, faculty and staff needs. The new design leverages the expanded capabilities of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Office Forms Server 2007. The presenters will share best practices in design and deployment, specific performance-improvement goals, technical and process development decisions, considerations for the various types of users and the kinds of shared workspaces and collaboration frameworks implemented.

H066. Group Policy (2-hour session)

Presenters: Jim Long and Steve Massman, MOREnet

This session will delve deeper into Group Policy. We will present an overview of best practices and then show how to create and manage Group Policy Objects. We will discuss common scenarios and how to deploy these within Group Policy.

H067. To Encrypt or Not to Encrypt

In the wake of the VA and other organizations losing personal data, many organizations are having knee-jerk reactions to encrypting all data and communications on the network. This session will look at the benefits and costs of encrypted storage, backup and transmission of critical data on your computers and network.

Staying up with the technology is a challenge for colleges and universities as students continue to lug with them a host of electronic devices to occupy them during their academic and leisure time on campus. While most universities and colleges have been able to stay up-to-date with technology, the challenge to maintain a competitive advantage is always looming. Today, recruiting top students and retaining quality faculty is as important as ever as higher education institutions prepare tomorrow's students to confront careers in a global economy. This session will examine what universities and colleges across the country are doing to keep up with the latest technology trends. The discussion will revolve around the issues regarding Internet access, cellular phones, online courses, distance learning, recruitment efforts and gadgets from home. Hear colleagues from local Missouri campuses discuss their current information technology strategies and plans for the future.
