H063. Adventures in High-End Video Webcasting
Presenter: Marcel Bechtoldt, University of Missouri – St. Louis
Track: Teaching and Learning with Technology
As educational institutions continue to adopt video streaming as a cost-effective way of distributing educational content, special presentations and live video teleconferences, the complexity of technical support becomes very challenging. This session will review adventures in supporting remote multiple cameras, mixed media and computer generated graphics in a video production with video
streaming support. Lessons learned and the search to keep the complex media attainable, yet simplify the setup process and still keep the quality high, will be discussed. A diagram of process will be explained and a product that has helped us attain our goals and offers a possible alternative for controlling video classrooms in the future will be demonstrated. It’s all in the black box--lets look and see what's inside!
H064. Virtualization: Using VMWare and SAN Technology for Data Center Flexibility and Disaster Recovery
Presenter: Matt Nelson, Maryville University of St.
Louis
Track: Security and Technical Infrastructure
Storage area networks and server virtualization are the hottest
topics and latest technologies today. Maryville
University has leveraged these technologies to address some of the biggest
concerns in the data center: redundancy, high availability, disaster recovery
and cost savings. We will discuss the advantages, disadvantages, triumphs,
pitfalls and costs of moving to a virtual world and the unique opportunities
it provides. We will share some unexpected benefits to our backup system,
disaster preparedness and our bottom line. We will describe how and
why we chose virtualization and how it can help you too.
H065. Intranet Collaboration Using SharePoint
Presenters: Richard Schumacher and Dr. Craig Klimczak, St. Louis Community College
Track: Leadership, Management and Collaboration
Continuous improvement is an essential ingredient in the development
and enhancement of self-service intranet solutions for information access,
document and knowledge management, effective organizational communications,
deployment of collaborative electronic workspaces, support of collaborative
activities and workflows, transition to electronic forms and presentation of
leadership-friendly key performance indicators. St. Louis Community College
is re-engineering its intranet infrastructure (which used a combination of
traditional Web and SharePoint Portal technology) based on lessons learned,
industry best practices and evolving organizational, faculty and staff needs.
The new design leverages the expanded capabilities of Microsoft Office SharePoint
Server 2007 and Office Forms Server 2007. The presenters will share best practices
in design and deployment, specific performance-improvement goals, technical
and process development decisions, considerations for the various types of
users and the kinds of shared workspaces and collaboration frameworks implemented.

Group Policy.
H067. To Encrypt or Not to Encrypt
Presenter: Randy Raw, MOREnet

In the wake of the VA and other organizations losing personal
data, many organizations are having knee-jerk reactions to encrypting all data
and communications on the network. This session will look at the benefits and
costs of encrypted storage, backup and transmission of critical data on your
computers and network.
H068. The Competitive Campus and Technology (Vendor)
Presenters: Karen Montgomery and Jason Hudnall, AT&T
Track: Leadership, Management and Collaboration
Staying up with the technology is a challenge for colleges
and universities as students continue to lug with them a host of electronic
devices to occupy them during their academic and leisure time on campus. While
most universities and colleges have been able to stay up-to-date with technology,
the challenge to maintain a competitive advantage is always looming. Today,
recruiting top students and retaining quality faculty is as important as ever
as higher education institutions prepare tomorrow's students to confront careers
in a global economy. This session will examine what universities and colleges
across the country are doing to keep up with the latest technology trends.
The discussion will revolve around the issues regarding Internet access, cellular
phones, online courses, distance learning, recruitment efforts and gadgets
from home. Hear colleagues from local Missouri campuses discuss their current
information technology strategies and plans for the future.
