July 2014 Member Update

FY15 State Funding Withholds Impact Missouri State Library REAL Program

As you are probably aware, on June 24, the Governor signed the budget and released a list of General Revenue line item vetoes and withholds. The withholds included the full amount of the REAL Appropriation ($3.1 million) for FY15 which starts July 1, 2014. Since the full amount of the REAL Appropriation has been withheld, at this time the State Library is not able to enter into an agreement with MOREnet for FY15 services. MOREnet is actively working with the State Library and individual libraries to address the withhold impact.

These monies have traditionally funded the online resources that benefit all members with either a Full and Basic membership package. Fortunately, MOREnet has a contingency fund that allows us to renew EBSCO, Gale and Learning Express Library for FY15. We are actively talking with ProQuest about our options to retain access to HeritageQuest for FY15 and hope to share this information as soon as possible. Unfortunately, Job and Career Accelerator and Popular Software Tutorials will not be renewed after September 30, 2014.

Please plan to join State Librarian, Barbara Reading and MOREnet on Thursday, July 10 for a web seminar to address the REAL Program withhold announced on June 24. We will address FY15 services and fees for libraries and field your questions.

Date: Thursday, July 10
Time: 10:30-11:30 a.m.

  • To join the Adobe Connect meeting room go to<. Please choose Enter as a Guest by typing your first and last name. Please mute your computer’s microphone; we will use the phone line for discussion.

Please note: There is a technical limitation of 100 participants for this event. If multiple individuals from your library plan to join the session, we encourage you to share a computer and phone line.

Missouri SE Fiber Project Welcomes our Two Newest Subscribers

Please welcome Southeast Missouri State University and the Kennett School District as the latest member organizations who have signed up to be part of the SE Fiber Project!

In April, MOREnet announced this exciting project; a public-private partnership with Sho-Me Technologies to expand the fiber infrastructure for high-capacity, low-cost Internet access in the Southeast area of Missouri, an area underserved by existing broadband infrastructure. With this expansion, MOREnet can help members in Southeast Missouri build fiber directly from the network to their organization.

Two Vendor Choices for Internet Content Filtering Now Available

Based on feedback from you, we have been exploring a second filtering solution for members.

Early next week, we will announce a new consortium discount opportunity for iboss, an appliance-based filtering solution! An iboss web seminar is scheduled for Wednesday, July 23 at 10 a.m. if you’d like to save the date. Our current offering powered by Netsweeper is still available and with this new choice, MOREnet now offers members two filtering options at deeply discounted rates.

Exciting, No Cost and Low Cost Opportunities to Better Equip your Staff in Cyber Security Awareness

By working daily with members in the realm of network security, MOREnet knows that sometimes our weakest link in the fight against cyber vulnerabilities is the human itself.

Through our partnership with REN-ISAC and SANS*, MOREnet is able to share information about bulk discounts on SANS training. The training is available to all educational institutions and libraries. For full details, go to: The current summer purchase window is June 1 – July 30.

MOREnet is pleased to make available 1200 licenses (up to 10 per organization) at no additional cost on a first-come, first serve basis. This is especially useful for member organizations who don’t need the minimum of 1200 licenses, but just need a few.

The MOREnet licenses include “Securing the Human” End User and Phishing Online Training Modules. The training consists of short, high quality video clips that are easily understandable and pertinent to situations that staff may encounter. You can see a list of the modules at, but you have to sign-up for the service before you have full access.
