Service Description

kinetic is a suite of software delivering website hosting and e-mail hosting. The kinetic service allows MOREnet members to maintain their organization's webspace and/or e-mail on MOREnet-managed servers, while retaining local administration and control of content and access.

MOREnet maintains the hardware in a secure facility and provides system monitoring 24x7. Account maintenance transactions take place through an encrypted session to ensure security.

MOREnet will assist subscribers with converting existing e-mail and Web services to kinetic. Organizations can use an existing Web address, or URL, or can request a new one.

Features

Website Hosting

• Use an existing Internet address, or URL, or MOREnet will help you register one.
• Your webmaster can delegate permissions to publish Web content to specific directories. This is perfect for specialized websites that will be maintained by other individuals in the organization or for student projects.
• Sufficient storage space for your websites' needs.
• An online Community Calendar for posting special events or regular activities.
• Online usage reports.
• FormMail which takes web form submissions and delivers them via e-mail.
• Website searches performed by a Google Mini search appliance.
• Z39.50 capability for searching a library's online catalog.
• Additional web server resources including custom headers and footers, server side includes (SSI), and user cookie logging.

E-mail Hosting

• E-mail accounts for faculty, staff and students. kinetic accounts are not available to community members and patrons of public libraries.
• Use any common client software to access e-mail or use the Webmail feature to access e-mail from any Internet accessible computer with a Web browser.
• Includes e-mail virus and spam filtering.
• Automatic e-mail forwarding and auto reply.
• An easy-to-use Web-based interface allows local administrators to manage the organization’s e-mail disk quota and accounts, including creation, grouping and password changes.
• Account holders are responsible for managing their e-mail account disk quota and can access their account at all times, change their password and check other details about their account.
• Automatic daily retention of all inbound e-mail to and outbound e-mail from the subscribing member’s accounts.
  • Daily e-mail is retained for three years and is automatically destroyed by MOREnet after the three year retention period. Once destroyed, retained e-mail cannot be restored or retrieved.
  • Retained e-mail storage infrastructure is managed only by MOREnet system administrators.
  • Access to retained e-mail will be provided only in response to a legal request (subpoena or other legal action).
  • Retained e-mail is not included or calculated in the disk space determination or quota managed by each subscribing member organization.
  • Members are responsible for determining how this automatic e-mail retention aligns with their own organization’s record retention policies or requirements.
  • Subscribing organizations may choose to opt out of the e-mail retention feature by providing a written request to MOREnet.

Additional kinetic Features

• Java Server Pages Web applications for creating your own special features are available on an as requested basis for an additional fee.
• PHP/Perl Application Server.

Technical Requirements and Support

• Internet connectivity
• Web browser (version 4 or higher)
• FTP client
• E-mail client (if not using webmail)

FrontPage and kinetic: The kinetic service places no restrictions on webpage design tools. FrontPage can be used to design a webpage. However, FrontPage Server Extensions are not part of the kinetic service. Please refer to http://kinetic.more.net/web/faqweb.shtml for additional information.

Eligibility

Any MOREnet member organization is eligible for the kinetic service.

Conditions for Use

kinetic users are subject to MOREnet Service Policies.

Accessing the Service

1. Submit an application. (PDF file; 82 KB)
2. Applicants will be contacted by MOREnet Technical Support to begin the activation process. Administration accounts will be activated and a migration area will be provided for organizations with existing e-mail addresses or Web content. This area is used to recreate any accounts and migrate Web content without interrupting existing service.
3. When the organization is ready to go into production, the requested domain name will be pointed at the kinetic server and content in the migration area will be moved to this domain. This allows for seamless transition.

Pricing

Pricing for the kinetic service is based on the total amount of disk space used for both Web and e-mail activity, based on the table below. Organizations should purchase more than actual amount needed to allow room for growth.

The billing process will begin automatically upon receipt of an order form. The service will be prorated by the month of entry for orders received after July 1. Organizations will be able to purchase additional disk space during the year, if needed.

The kinetic Service will be automatically renewed each fiscal year unless written notification to cancel is received by June 1.

Reports of actual disk and account usage are available online to organizational kinetic administrators.

Cancellations

• Written notification is required by June 1 of intent to discontinue use of the kinetic service, or any part of the kinetic service.
