MOREnet Plans Network Upgrade, Makes Significant Investment in New Technology

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

As part of our continuing commitment to provide members with a robust and reliable network, MOREnet will be upgrading significant elements of its router network at the four hub sites in St. Louis, Columbia, Kansas City and Springfield.
MOREnet first deployed its current routing equipment in 1998 with the expectation that the technology would meet our members’ needs for seven to ten years.  During that time, the backbone has grown from an OC3 (155 Mbps) to 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10,000 Mbps).  Through all of the growth, MOREnet has been able to extend the life cycle of this equipment for 13+ years with diligent upgrades and maintenance. The result is equipment that has performed well and has been highly reliable for our members.

Bandwidth demand continues to grow, and it is important for MOREnet to meet that demand so members can achieve their missions.  Since July 1, MOREnet has added over 2500 Mbps of member bandwidth capacity to our network and requests for additional bandwidth from members continue to come in almost daily.
As a result, MOREnet will make a significant investment to upgrade its routing infrastructure.  The new technology is at least eight times faster than the current equipment and will enable a migration path to 100 Gigabit Ethernet when needed.
During the last week of December, MOREnet engineers will install the new routers in the St. Louis hub facility, which will be quickly followed by installations in Columbia, Kansas City and Springfield.  All four hubs will be upgraded before the end of March.  These upgrades will ensure that MOREnet will be well positioned to meet the future bandwidth needs of all members.
