MOREnet Staffing Reductions

Monday, October 18, 2010

Since receiving word that the MOREnet state appropriation was withheld for FY11, MOREnet leadership has worked to reduce or defer costs in many areas. Today, with a heavy heart, we are announcing the difficult decision to reduce staffing to align expenditures with resources.
Many of the staff positions being eliminated are in areas where manual processes have recently been automated through hardware and software investments, where service demand has already declined or where new strategies are being pursued.
MOREnet is in the process of realigning its operations to focus on member services and new service development. MOREnet’s objective is to insure that you, our valued members, receive the highest value, leading-edge technology to increase the value of the consortium. In addition, MOREnet is seeking new opportunities to serve a broader educational constituency.
MOREnet realizes this is a challenging economic climate for everyone and remains committed to serving all members with quality support and services. It was anticipated that a number of members would reduce or cancel services after the state funding elimination forced significant fee increases for FY11, particularly for the K-12 school district members in rural areas. In many cases, MOREnet has successfully renegotiated network circuit rates to help these organizations reduce costs and continue their membership. As of today, fewer than 10 members have given notice that they are leaving the MOREnet consortium to seek service elsewhere. In order to achieve a balance between resources and expenditures, MOREnet made certain assumptions about cost savings that could be achieved to manage rate increases. Unfortunately, MOREnet has been unable to achieve those savings, and that has prompted the actions announced today.
We are currently in the process of finalizing FY12 membership models and fees for all members and will be announcing this information in November. While the decision to reduce staffing was difficult, we want to reassure you that our goal is to minimize the impact to our members. We will continue to be responsive and provide the quality of support you need and expect.
As always, should you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your program manager or me. Thank you for your continued support of MOREnet; we appreciate the opportunity to work with you.
