You will be assigned to a team that specializes in one area affected by current conditions of the Missouri River. As you gather information about your area, try to determine that person's viewpoint in terms of the importance of revitalizing the Missouri River.

Gathering Information
Click on the photograph of the specialist for the team you are assigned. Read the job description and list of questions to guide your information gathering. You may include other questions you think are important, too. Use the links provided to gather information from the Internet.

Comparing Viewpoints
After you gather information from the Internet and other sources to answer questions, take turns on your team sharing your specialist's viewpoint on the Missouri River. Create a graphic to show how the six viewpoints are similar and how they are different.

  1. Why do you think each specialist has a certain viewpoint about the importance of the Missouri River?
  2. Are any of the viewpoints more important than the others? Why or why not?

Brainstorming a Possible Solution
After sharing each of your points of view, brainstorm as a team two or three possible solutions to revitalize the Missouri River.

Each person on the team should reflect on the solution proposed by your team and determine a possible solution from the specialist's viewpoint. Write a paragraph that briefly summarizes the solution and include reasons why you, as a specialist, think the solution represents your viewpoint. Be sure to give examples of how your viewpoint relates to those of the other specialists on your team.

Preparing a Presentation for the Department of Conservation
Your presentation (created as a team using whatever forum you think is appropriate) for the "Save the Missouri River" conference should include answers to questions:

  1. What is the problem(s) with the Missouri River today? Include facts and statistics in your response.
  2. Why is it important to revitalize the Missouri River? Include facts and statistics in your response. Think about how the river has changed since the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
  3. What is your team's solution? Provide a good description.
  4. How do you think your team's solution considers the viewpoints of the six specialists?
