Quality of Service Bandwidth Management

MOREnet provides a bandwidth management service by implementing Cisco’s Quality of Service (QoS). With QoS, essential services can be assigned priority access to the network. Routine data can tolerate delays in transmission unless the delays are extreme, but even short delays can cause jitter and freezes in voice and video.

QoS gives priority to videoconferencing transmissions and access to MOBIUS during periods of heavy network use to reduce the effect of network congestion on video quality and library transactions. QoS only affects quality, however, when the member’s connection is operating near bandwidth capacity limits.

Note: MOREnet only implements QoS for H.323 videoconferencing and MOBIUS traffic traversing the MOREnet network. For any other application of bandwidth management, MOREnet will only make recommendations.

Requirements

QoS is implemented on MOREnet-managed routers. Members using MOREnet-managed routers do not require any equipment configuration or hardware changes to benefit from QoS.

QoS only makes it possible to assign priority to the member’s videoconferencing and/or MOBIUS traffic. Labeling the videoconferencing and MOBIUS traffic to make the priority work is the responsibility of the member organization. MOREnet will provide detailed instructions on how to label traffic for priority under QoS.

Eligibility and Pricing

Quality of Service bandwidth management is available to all MOREnet members using MOREnet-managed routers to access the Internet. MOREnet does not implement QoS on member-managed routers.

Quality of Service bandwidth management is included in MOREnet's standard Internet Connection service. There is no additional cost for this service.

Support Provided

MOREnet will configure MOREnet-managed routers so that the highest priority can be given to videoconferencing and second highest to MOBIUS. Other traffic is not prioritized.
