Domain Name System (DNS)
MOREnet will provide registration and maintenance services
for .mo.us domain names, subdomains and host names. MOREnet also assists
its members with the registration and maintenance of other domain names, subdomains
and host names. Before you request MOREnet's DNS services, please read MOREnet's Domain
Name System FAQ and review the conventions shown below.
Educause provides registration of .edu domain names.
To register an .edu domain name, see http://www.educause.edu/edudomain.
There are a number of organizations that register other domains, such as .com,
.org, and .net. A list of these organizations can be found at http://www.internic.net/alpha.html.

Non-MOREnet
Organizations not affiliated with MOREnet wishing to
register .mo.us domains
will find information on the .us domain
registrar's website. Many .us localities currently
exist. Additional information can be obtained by contacting the .us domain
registrar or the appropriate delegated
subdomain contact. Information about registering non-delegated .us localities
is available under the Interim Process heading on the Delegated
Managers webpage.
To request a locality-based domain name, please complete
and submit the .us Domain
Template to
the .us domain registrar or
the appropriate delegated
subdomain contact.
Domain Registration Other Than .mo.us
MOREnet does not register domains other than .mo.us. Educause is
the sole register for .edu domain names. Information on registering
an .edu domain name
can be obtained from http://www.educause.edu/edudomain/.
There are a number of organizations that can register other domain names, such
as .com, .net, .org. A list of these organizations can be found at http://www.internic.net/alpha.html.
These organizations all charge an annual fee for registering your domain name.
Subdomain Registrations
An organization can have multiple subdomains under a single domain. Subdomains may be used to group together host names for related computers within a domain. They may be used to separate groups of internal host names or Microsoft Active Directory Domains from other host names. As always, it is best to avoid mixing internal and external DNS. Subdomains can also be used to provide name space for groups within your organization, providing them some autonomy in their domain name service.
Typically, subdomains are registered at the same time the host
is registered.They
do not require submission of an additional request, unless they are to be serviced
by another name server or configuration file. Simply use subdomains as extensions
to your domain to separate services, if needed. The subdomain will be added
automatically to your DNS configuration
file when you append it to your domain name in your host name
requests.
Host Registrations
MOREnet can process requests for host registrations under registered domains or subdomains, when we are servicing the domain name from our name server. An organization can have multiple hosts under one domain. Host registrations are typically used for a Web server, mail server or workstation. Many times a computer will need a registered address to be able to download software with enhanced encryption, like Netscape Communicator.
To register a host name or subdomain through MOREnet:
- Log in to MyMOREnet and
select Domain Name Services, or
- Contact MOREnet Technical Support by phone or e-mail.
