SmartFilter Quick Install Guide: Novell BorderManager

Minimum Requirements

  • Server running BorderManager 3.6 SP3 or higher (BorderManager 3.8 SP4 or higher recommended)
  • Additional workstation or Windows 2000 SP4 or 2003 Server with a minimum of 512 MB RAM to run the SmartFilter Admin Server and Category Server software. (See Windows' My Computer > Properties, or Task Manager, to determine your available memory.)

Installation Process

Download the Installation Files

  1. Download the following installation files from the Secure Computing Software and Evaluations page. Allow 5-40 minutes for the download, depending on connection speed.
    • Admin/Bess Edition/Win32 - sf411_win32_admin_bess.exe
    • Category Server - sf411_win32_csp.exe
  2. Obtain a valid serial number from MOREnet.

Install SmartFilter Administration Software

  1. Log on as Administrator.
  2. Install the SmartFilter Administration software by double-clicking the sf411_win32_admin_bess.exe file.
  3. Click Next. The Software License Agreement window appears.
  4. Read the license agreement, select I accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next to continue. The Information window appears.
  5. Review the Information window. Click Next.
  6. Accept the default destination.
  7. Click Next. The Component window appears.
  8. Select all of the components.
    • SmartFilter Administration Server
    • SmartFilter Administration Console
    • Note: You can choose to install SmartReporter at a later time. When you install
    • it, point it to 127.0.0.1.
  9. Click Next. The Serial Number window appears.
  10. Type the serial number and click Next to continue. The Action After Expiration window appears.
  11. Choose whether or not to block Web traffic if your Control List subscription expires. Choices are:
    • Allow all Web access (Default)
    • Block all Web access
  12. Click Next. The Administrator Setup window appears.
  13. Create a SmartFilter Administration account with user name sfadmin. This account name should be unique (not on any other domain or machine in your network).
  14. [Optional] Enter your e-mail settings. The e-mail information that you provide populates the Enterprise E-mail Setup screen in the SmartFilter Administration Console and the SmartReporter user interface. If you choose not to enter your e-mail settings at this time, you can specify the information later in the SmartFilter Administration Console.
  15. Select a default policy.
    (For more information on each policy see Appendix A of the SmartFilter Administration Guide.) Default Policy options are:
    • Typical Minimum Filter
    • Typical School Filter
    • Typical Business Filter
    • Business + Productivity
    • Business + Security
    • Business + Bandwidth
  16. Click Next. The SmartFilter Administration Setup Summary window appears.
  17. Review the information on the Summary window. If you want to change any of the settings, click Back. If you are satisfied with the settings, click Next.
  18. A progress message displays during the installation. When administration software installation is complete, the SmartFilter Information window appears and, if you installed it, SmartReporter is started.
  19. Click Finish. The software is installed.

Install the Category Server

  1. To begin the installation, double-click the downloaded sf411_win32_csp.exe file.
  2. Accept all defaults and type the Administrator password used when creating the Administration account above.
    Note: Port 4004 accepts CSP requests.
  3. Type the IP address of this machine and use the same Administrator account and password.
  4. Allow the category list to download (takes 5 - 40 minutes, depending on connection speed) - C:\Program files\Secure Computing\Smartfilter CSP Server\sfcontrol.

Configure BorderManager

  1. Copy n2h2.acl from the sys:\public directory to the sys:\etc\border\english directory.
  2. Restart Novell BorderManager services (stopbrd and then startbrd).
  3. Open NetWare Administrator. Click the server and select BorderManager Access Rules.
  4. Delete the third party rule for the old N2H2 filter.
  5. Create a new third party rule for the new settings. (The rule appears the same but has more categories).
  6. Select the Category Server Info button and replace the IP address and port number with those of the new CSP server. (Use port 4004.)
