Internet Content Filtering: Member Hosted
With the member-hosted Internet Content Filtering service, the filtering hardware and software are located on the member network and on equipment provided and maintained by the member. This configuration allows the organization to have complete control over the service and receive access to full reporting and configuration capabilities.
Software and Hardware Requirements
MOREnet will provide consulting and technical assistance with
configuring and troubleshooting the SmartFilter server. The member is responsible
for ensuring that the correct hardware/software operating system is functioning
properly before installing SmartFilter. Each operating system has its own hardware
requirements, in addition to the hardware requirements for SmartFilter. Support
does not cover installation or troubleshooting the Microsoft Windows operating
system.
Minimum SmartFilter Server Requirements
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server (SP 4) or Windows 2003 Server
- 1 GHz processor
- 1 GB RAM
- 6 GB free disk space
- Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) installed prior to Microsoft
.NET Framework and working on port 80
- Latest service packs from Microsoft.
Minimum NAT Firewall Requirements
(SmartFilter can be configured without a firewall.
See Without a Firewall in SmartFilter Network Designs section below.)
- Cisco IOS Firewall Feature Set or the Advanced Security Feature Set running on a Cisco 871 router or higher model with dual Ethernet ports and IOS version 12.2 or higher
- Cisco PIX 6.3
- Linux Firewall with Squid Proxy with the Squid 2.5 server running on one of the required Network Operating Systems below:
- Linux RedHat 9.0

- ES 3.0 (Update 6)
- Microsoft ISA 2000 or 2004
- Novell BorderManager 3.6 (SP 3) on server running NetWare
6.0
- SonicWALL 6.3.0.0
SmartFilter Network Designs
MOREnet will support three network designs for SmartFilter
running on local area networks (LANs):
- SmartFilter server with a supported NAT firewall on a
separate box
- SmartFilter server with a supported NAT firewall on the
same box
- SmartFilter server with no firewall
NAT Firewalls
Separate Box
SmartFilter must be installed on a separate
server when using the following supported NAT
firewalls.
- Cisco IOS
- Cisco PIX
- Novell BorderManager
- SonicWALL
The diagram below shows an example of a separate, off-box firewall
deployment.

Same Box
SmartFilter and
the following supported NAT firewalls can be installed on the same server.
- Linux Firewall (RedHat) with Squid Proxy
- Microsoft ISA
The diagram below shows an example of deployment of SmartFilter and firewall software on the same box.
