Discussion Lists: Application Form Guide
Applying for a discussion list is simple but some parts of
the application can be confusing. Print a copy of the New
Discussion List Application (PDF
file; 84 KB) and complete it using the instructions below.
-
List name. Decide on a name for the list and write it in
the first space. The name can be anything you wish but should be simple and
indicate what the list is about. A few guidelines:
- Use all lowercase characters.
- Make the name one word for convenience.
- Do not use numbers at the beginning (for example, 4yrsurvey).
- Organization. This may be the organization
name of the individual submitting the application or the name of the organization
most closely related to the list to be created. Please provide the most appropriate
organization name.
- Owner name. The person you want to be the list owner. This name is
often the same as the person who requests the creation of the discussion list.
- E-mail address. The list owner's e-mail address.
- List requestor. The name of the person asking for the list to be created.
This name may be the same or different from the list owner's name.
- Short description of list. This description will
tell the Mailman administrator the purpose of the list. The full description
is not displayed publicly, but information taken from the full description
may be used to create the brief description of the list that appears on the
Welcome page.
- Posting privileges. Choose one. Indicate whether anyone who reads the
list may post messages to it, or only subscribed list members may post
items to the list.
- Type of list. Choose one. An open list
is not monitored by a moderator. In a moderated list, someone reads
all postings and keeps the discussion flowing smoothly. If there is no moderator,
the list owner steps in, if necessary.
- Moderator's name and E-mail address. If you choose to have a
moderated list, you must supply the name and e-mail address for the moderator.
- Subscription type. Selecting Open subscription allows
a person to subscribe by sending an e-mail request to Mailman. Select Subscription
approval by owner
required, if you prefer that subscription requests be screened and approved
by the list owner. The list owner must then permit a subscriber to join the
list.
- Display list name on mailing lists Welcome page?
A command sent to the Mailman server will return a listing of all discussion
lists that have Yes marked for this option. If you do not
want your discussion list to appear in this list, mark No.
- Display subscriber list information?
Check
No to allow only list members to see a listing of subscribers
by sending a command to Mailman. Sometimes people want to see who receives the
messages they send. When making this choice, however, keep in mind that the subscribers
list displays both subscribers' names and their e-mail addresses.
- Archive list messages?
Answer Yes to this question to have Mailman compile
all messages sent each day and keep them in an archive.
- Public archive or Private archive?
If you choose to archive the activity on this list, choose either Public
archive or Private archive. Public archives can be
viewed by anyone through the Mailman archives. Private archives can only be viewed
by list members.
- Read the MOREnet Service Policies.
- Sign the form and send it to MOREnet or fax it to: (573) 884-6673, Attn: Eric
Nicklas for K-12 TNP, Nancy
Piringer for Higher Education or Jeanne
Sullivan for REAL.
