Frequently Asked Questions

What is kinetic?
kinetic is a suite of software delivering Internet services. The primary services are Web, e-mail, e-mail account management and Usenet news. Also included are a variety of customizable Web applications, such as a calendar, community directory, job listings and so on.

What is the kinetic service?
The kinetic service allows MOREnet customers to maintain their organization's webspace and/or e-mail on MOREnet-managed servers.

How do I maintain my webspace?
Webspace is administratively accessed through FTP. Many HTML editors support page publishing through FTP. Additionally, you delegate publishing privileges to others, so that multiple individuals can maintain different sections of webspace. Find more information at publishing to your kinetic services website with FTP.

How do I maintain e-mail accounts?
E-mail accounts are added and managed through a Web application known as "kinetic Manager." It and other individual account functions such as password changes are sent through an encrypted session over the Internet.

What is Usenet News?
Usenet News is a global collection of discussion groups. Anyone can participate in any of around 30,000 active newsgroups. The newsgroups are categorized by topic, and collected into eight major hierarchies: computers, humanities, miscellaneous, news, recreation, science, society and talk. All major browsers (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.) include a news reader.

Please note that Usenet News is not available to K-12 TNP participants.

What will my Internet address be?
Your organization's Internet address, or domain name, can stay the same, or it can change, if desired, within a small range of options. If you do not have a domain name yet, MOREnet will work with you to register one.

What does kinetic run on?
kinetic runs on Sun Microsystems hardware and Solaris operating system. Core software technologies include the Apache webserver, Postfix mail server, Java virtual machine, MySQL database server and Tomcat application server.

How secure is the service?
MOREnet follows the best current industry practices for security diligently.

Where is the hardware located?
The computers used for the kinetic service are located at the Telecommunications building on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus, in the room containing MOREnet's Columbia network hub. The Columbia hub is protected by two APCC Silicon series uninterruptible power supplies and a diesel electric generator.
