Install & Configure IIS 4.0 Web and FTP Server

Windows NT 4.0 with Option Pack 4

Introduction

This document is intended to help administrators install and configure the IIS 4.0 SMTP Service contained in the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack. After installation, the SMTP Service may be used as a Smart Relay Host for Mail Server applications (Mercury Mail for Windows NT and Novell).

Before You Begin

Note: Microsoft SMTP Service has the same minimum hardware requirements as Windows NT Server 4.0 and IIS 4.0.

Prerequisites

  • Windows NT Server 4.0, Service Pack 4 or 5

  • Internet Information Server 4.0 See installation documentation at: http://www.more.net/technical/netserv/servers/microsoft/iis4nt4.html.

  • Secondary IP Address bound to NIC - to be used for the SMTP Service.
    Note: This is only necessary if the Web server and SMTP Service are installed on the same machine.

Bind Secondary IP Address

  1. Right-click Network Neighborhood.

  2. Click Properties.

  3. Select the Protocols tab.

  4. Highlight TCP/IP Protocol.

  5. Click Properties.

  6. Click Advanced.

  7. In the IP Address section, click Add.

  8. Enter Secondary IP Address and Subnet Mask.

  9. Click OK.

  10. Click OK.

  11. Click OK.

  12. If prompted, restart server.

Install SMTP Service

Note: During the initial installation of IIS 4.0, if you chose the Typical installation option, the SMTP Service and all related documentation was installed. If you chose the Custom option and selected the SMTP Service, the service and related documentation was installed. (If the SMTP Service is already installed, skip ahead to the Configure SMTP Service section.)

  1. Select Start > Programs > Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack > Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack Setup.

  2. Click Next.

  3. Click Add/Remove.

  4. Highlight the Internet Information Server component and click Show Subcomponents.

  5. Select SMTP Service. Click OK.

  6. Click Next.

  7. Keep the Default Mailroot Directory and click Next.

  8. When installation is complete, click Finish.

Configure SMTP Service

SMTP Service IP Address

Only necessary if the Mail Server and SMTP Service are installed on the same machine.

  1. Select Start > Programs > Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack > Microsoft Internet Information Server > Internet Service Manager.

  2. The Microsoft Management Console window opens. (Figure 1)

  4. Highlight the Default SMTP Site.

  5. Click Action > Properties (The Action button is located on the toolbar).

  6. Select the SMTP Site tab.

  7. From the IP address dropdown list, select the Secondary IP Address.

  8. Click Apply.

  9. Click OK.

Configure SMTP Relay Restrictions

  1. Select Start > Programs > Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack > Microsoft Internet Information Server > Internet Service Manager.

  2. Highlight the Default SMTP Site.

  3. Click Action > Properties.

  4. Select the Directory Security tab.

  5. In the Relay Restrictions section, click the Edit button.

  6. In the By default section, select the Not allowed to relay option.

  7. Click Add.

  8. Select Single Computer.

  9. Enter the IP Address of the Mail Server. Click OK.

  10. If the SMTP Service and the Mail Server are installed on the same machine, click the Add button again.

  11. Select Single Computer.

  12. Enter the Secondary IP Address of Server > Workstation. Click OK.

  13. Clear the Allow any computer that successfully authenticates to relay option.

  14. Click OK.

  15. Click OK.

Note: If both SMTP and Mail Server are installed on the same machine, you need to configure your Mail Server to use the Secondary IP Address as the Smart Host address. If your Mail Server is installed on a separate machine, use the IP address of the Server where SMTP Service is installed.
