Mercury Mail for NT Conversion to Smart Relay***

***Note:   This document is offered for informational support only. No active technical support or document revisions will be made after the date noted at the bottom of the document.

Use Mercury Mail 3.01a or 3.21c as a Smart Relay

Mercury/32 3.21c and version 3.01a support complete delivery of Internet mail without a mail relay service.

Any version below 3.01a will require an update to Mercury 3.21c. Be sure only to select the Install Update option outlined below. Choosing New Installation will require re-creation of all user accounts. See the modifying the mercury.ini file section below if updating from a version lower than 3.01a.

To activate Mercury as a smart host complete the following steps:

Update Mercury

The smart host option minimally requires version 3.01a

  1. Launch the Mercury application.
  2. Select File > Help.
  3. Choose About Mercury.

The version number will be displayed at the bottom of the active window.

If an update is needed:

  1. Visit http://www.pmail.com.
  2. Download Mercury/32 3.21c.
  3. Shut down the Mercury Mail Server.
  4. Launch the newly downloaded install program.
  5. Select the Install Update option (Warning! If the New Installation option is selected, users will need to be re-created).

Enable the MercuryE module

Once the update is complete, launch Mercury.

  1. Select File > Configuration.
  2. Choose Protocol modules from the list.
  3. Select MercuryE SMTP end to end delivery client from the list of options.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Shut down the Mercury Mail Server.

Selecting the MercuryE option will automatically deselect the MercuryC option previously in use.

Modify the Mercury.ini file (if updating from a version older than 3.01a)

If the Mercury Mail application has been updated from a version lower than 3.01a, Mercury will not recognize the changes made to the MercuryE module until the mercury.ini file is modified to reflect this.

  1. Locate the mercury.ini file in the Mercury folder.

  2. Launch the file.
  3. Locate the MercuryC module.
  4. Under [MercuryC] place the text [MercuryE].
  5. Save changes and Exit.

Configure MercuryE Module

  1. Launch Mercury Mail.
  2. Select File > Configuration.
  3. Choose MercuryE SMTP Client.
  4. Enter the primary dns server for the local site.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Restart Mercury Mail.

Mercury Mail should now be configured as a smart host.
