General Configuration Information for MOREnet Direct Connections
The purpose of this document is to make available the settings required to connect to the Internet using the MOREnet backbone. Though operating systems vary widely, these settings are valid no matter what Windows operating system is in use. These are not step-by-step instructions but they provide the information necessary to make a direct connection to the Internet. This document is intended for a basic MOREnet connection and does not take into account the use of firewalls, proxy servers, DHCP servers or filtering software.
Before You Begin
Before you begin configuration, be certain you have all the necessary items and requirements:
-
Windows CD-ROM in the computer's CD-ROM drive.
-
Ethernet card manual and information.
-
MOREnet-assigned IP address to assign to this computer.
-
MOREnet-assigned subnet mask to assign to this computer.
-
MOREnet router and any other routers that stand between this workstation and
the Internet must be set up and running properly.
The computer must have an Ethernet network card attached and configured within the operating system. The network card must be plugged into either the wall or a device such as a switch or a hub. Also, TCP/IP protocol must be installed in order to successfully connect to the Internet. On most new machines, the network card and TCP/IP protocol are already installed.
Configure TCP/IP Properties
-
Enter the MOREnet-assigned IP address for the workstation.
-
Enter the MOREnet-assigned subnet mask for the workstation.
-
Enter a host name for the workstation. The host name can be anything you want
it to be, but this area cannot be left blank. It is a good idea to name it something
meaningful.
-
Look up
the DNS servers in your area and enter them into the DNS configuration. Write
them in the blanks below for future reference.

If this information is not accessible, use 150.199.1.10, 150.199.178.1,
and 150.199.101.1.
-
Enter the correct gateway. If you do not have a firewall, the gateway will
be the router's gateway address. If you run a firewall then the gateway will be
the firewall's internal gateway address.
-
Disable WINS resolution.
Depending on what version of Windows you are running, you may be asked for the CD-ROM or the installation disks. Also the computer may need to be rebooted.
Test Your Connection
Test your connection by running one of your Internet clients such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. If you are unable to connect, or have questions or problems setting up Windows for a direct connection, contact your MOREnet coordinator or MOREnet representative.
