Configure Windows Me for Direct Connections

Note: Support of users who install to a custom directory location or otherwise deviate from these instructions may be limited. MOREnet documentation is written to support installation and configuration using default directories and layouts as described below. MOREnet Technical Support strongly recommends you follow these directions carefully and accurately.

Set Up Direct Networking

This portion of Configuring Windows Me for Direct Connections is for computers that have never been set up for a Windows Me direct network connection. If your computer is already configured for a direct connection, skip ahead to Test Your Connection.

  1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Network icon to open the Network control panel.

  3. Network dialog box

  4. Install TCP/IP Protocol:

    1. In the Network Configuration window, click Add.

    2. In the Select Network Component window, select Protocol > Add.

    3. In the left window of Select Network Protocol, click Microsoft.

    4. In the right window, click TCP/IP > OK.

  5. Configure TCP/IP Properties:

    1. In the Network Configuration window click TCP/IP.

    2. Click Properties to open the TCP/IP window.

    4. Select Specify an IP address.

    5. Select Use the Following IP address.

    6. Type in the MOREnet assigned IP address for your computer.

    7. Type in the MOREnet assigned netmask for your computer.

    8. Type in your router's default gateway.

    10. Select Use the Following DNS Server addresses.

    11. Look up the DNS servers for your area and write them into the blanks below for future reference.

    12. If this information is not accessible, use 150.199.1.10, 150.199.178.1 and 150.199.101.1.

    13. Type in the Preferred DNS Server.

    15. Type in the Alternate DNS Server.

    16. Click OK to return to the Local Area Connection Properties window.

  6. Save Your Network Configuration:

    1. In the Local Area Connection Properties window, click on OK.

    2. Unlike Windows 95 and 98, Windows Me will not prompt you to restart your computer.

Test Your Connection

Test your connection by running one of your Internet clients (such as Netscape Navigator). If you are unable to connect, or have questions or problems setting up Windows Me for a direct connection, contact your coordinator or representative.
