Configuring an FTP Client to Access Your kinetic Account

Choosing an FTP Client

You may use any FTP client that supports long user IDs. A long user ID is in the form of "username@some.org". The choice of client is yours. For those who are interested, WS-FTP LE has been tested and works just fine. Windows FTP may also work and does not require installation of a separate program.

FTP can be used to store and retrieve files in your kinetic account home directory. Additionally, those accounts that are granted Web publishing permissions will use FTP to upload and/or download files for the website(s).

Configuring an FTP Client

Once you have chosen an FTP client, the profile or configuration values for your client will need to be set. The steps to reach these settings vary depending on the FTP client you decide to use.

In your FTP client, set the following values:

Host Name/Address.

Enter ftp.your-kinetic-service-domain-name for this value. If your host name were some.org, you would enter ftp.some.org for this value.

Example: ftp.wbt.kinetic.more.net

User ID

Your FTP User ID will be your complete kinetic e-mail address. This address was provided to you when your account was created.

Host Type

Use either Automatic detect or Unix.

Password

Your password for FTP will be the same as your password for accessing e-mail. It is strongly recommended that you do not save your password in your FTP profile. Some FTP clients allow you to do this, but anyone gaining access to your computer would then be able to FTP to your kinetic account.

Configuring WS_FTP LE for kinetic class

If you are an administrator for your organization and your organization will be using the WS_FTP LE client, you will want to consider giving new account users the URL to this section to assist them with configuring their FTP clients.

  1. To open the WS_FTP LE client, select: Start > Programs > HTML Tools > WS_FTP LE.

  2. Click the New button to create new FTP profile.

  3. For Profile Name, enter kinetic.

  4. For Host Name/Address, enter ftp.wbt.kinetic.more.net.

  5. For Host Type, leave the value set at Automatic detect.

  6. For User ID, enter your complete kinetic email address.
    Example: admin02@learn.kinetic.more.net

  7. For Password, leave the field blank. You will be prompted for your password once you connect to the server. Do NOT check the Save Password box for security reasons.

  8. Click the Apply button.

  9. Click the OK button.
