Summertime Storage for Chromebooks

  • Published: Wednesday, May 22, 2019
As the school year winds down and students start to turn in Chromebooks or they go back into the carts for summer, remember that long term storage for Chromebooks is different than day to day.  This handy article from Google tells you how to set them up for summer storage so they are ready to go for next year.  A couple of interesting things to note.  Charge them to at least 80% before storing.  This will help keep the battery from fully discharging.  The article recommends NOT taking out the batteries.  Rather, it describes a nifty trick for keeping them fully shut down.
  1. Connect the device to a charger and turn it on.
  2. Hold Refresh Refresh and Power Power at the same time.
  3. While holding these keys, remove the power cable from device and then release the keys.
The device should shut down and remain off.
  4. Confirm the battery disconnect worked by pressing the power button.
The device should not power on, despite having a battery charge.
The Chromebook won’t power on by touching the power button or opening the lid, until you plug the device back to a power source.
Also, on the other end of your fantastic summer break, remember your Chromebooks will DEFINITELY need updates.  As has been noted in recent years, opening all of them up at the same time on the first day of classes is a guaranteed way to destroy the bandwidth at your school until they are done!  Come up with a plan for connecting them a cart or classroom at a time to guarantee they all update properly without slowing your network down.  Have a great summer!
