Prepare for the Missouri Computer Science Standards

  • Published: Monday, Aug. 12, 2019

This May, the Missouri State Board of Education approved new Computer Science Performance Standards for implementation during the 2019-2020 school year. Understanding that the timeline is aggressive, DESE reached out to us to partner for delivery of professional development.

The related courses already included with your Membership Service Package have been aligned to the standards. These include coding, robotics, prototyping and design, circuits and more. In addition, we are creating new courses to address specific needs such as an introduction to the CS standards as well as cyber security and digital citizenship.

The professional development partnership includes face to face training sessions in each of the nine DESE regions, interactive virtual courses offered both synchronously and asynchronously and, as always the in-house courses offered at the MOREnet offices in Columbia.

Regional trainings will begin this September and run through March 2020, with each region being host to four days? and covering various topics. At the conclusion of each regional session, participants will add to a shared drive of lesson plans, with access available to all Missouri schools.

All the courses and supporting material aligned with the Computer Science Standards will be free, regardless of the Membership Service Package your organization subscribes, thanks in part to the state’s Computer Science Education Fund. In addition to covering professional development from MOREnet, the fund also has grants available for schools who wish to help teachers work toward certification.

There will be a couple sessions at the MOREnet Annual Conference to unpack the CS standards and resources available for schools.
