This is a description of each of the courses we offer. Most of these classes can be scheduled as an in-service or are on the classroom training calendar. Many of them can be customized by your group on an as-needed basis. A few are only offered at the MILL in Columbia.

Apple iPad

Intro to iMovie for iPad

Using iMovie, Apple’s free video editing app, is an easy and fun way to start creating more complex videos. This one-hour demonstration will cover the interface, how to create videos and access resources and look at the basic editing tools in iMovie. This is a great session to prepare for our full iMovie for iPad class.

Intro to GarageBand for iPad

If you are looking for a way to record and edit audio or start creating your own music, GarageBand is an excellent choice. This free app from Apple is loaded with features, tools and sample files to get you started. This class will demonstrate how to use the basic interface to record voice audio tracks, and we’ll explore some of the many ways to create music in GarageBand. This is a great session to prepare for our full GarageBand for iPad class.

Apple GarageBand for iPad

Apple GarageBand makes working with sound and music easy and fun. GarageBand allows you to make awesome recordings of your voice, your musical creations or combinations of all of them! Basic Formatting With Google Docs

This demonstration shows users how to begin formatting different types of documents and setting up Google Docs to meet your workflow. Items discussed are setting defaults (fonts, sizes, etc.), working with spacing, setting tab stops, building navigation and adding images.

Google Docs Collaboration Tools

Once you make a doc and learn how to share it, you have many options for collaboration. Working in suggestion mode gives you final say over an edit before it goes in. Comparing documents via version history helps find content and see who did what to a document. Comments are a great way to asynchronously discuss a document and manage group tasks.

Once your form has been created you have several options for collecting, storing and interpreting your data. This session looks at the built-in tools for data collection as well as how to move your data to a separate Google Sheet for more robust analysis.

Google Forms

This class is a hands on, deep dive into Google’s form creation and spreadsheet tools, Google Forms and Sheets. Learn how to use all the features in Forms to set up and distribute everything from surveys to quizzes. Then learn to use Google Sheets to create spreadsheets to collect, analyze and manipulate data. Combine the two for a powerful set of tools! Participants will also learn to set up and utilize great tools from Google Add-ons.

Beginners Guide to Spreadsheets

Spreadsheets are an invaluable tool in today’s world. Many people are put off from learning because they are hesitant about formulas and think they have no real need. This is not true. Teachers can store information without complicated formulas. In this session we will look at ways to first learn how to use the spreadsheet to help better organize your teaching and beginning ways to introduce students to this valuable resource. The information learned will also apply to Excel.

This class is for those teachers who have used Classroom in the past and just need an overview of what has been released. This is usually a class for summer after ISTE and the latest and greatest updates are released.

Google Sites

This is a half-day, hands-on look at Google’s tool for creating websites, Google Sites. Participants should bring content and images and be prepared to leave with a fully functioning website! Learn how to insert and format content, adjust images and layouts and set up your easy-to-use, custom website.

Learning With Google

This is a hands-on look at Google’s amazing web resources for teachers. Google provides an entire set of lessons on utilizing Google tools together to create projects called Applied Digital Curriculum, complete with videos and a Classroom-like interface that tracks student progress. Be Internet Awesome is an outstanding tool for teaching digital citizenship and Internet safety. And the “withGoogle” sites have an astounding number of games, projects and experiments that lean on Google’s experimentation and expertise for just about every subject. And this is just the beginning. This guided tour will give you plenty of time to experience these tools and share what you find!

Google Arts and Culture

Don’t let the name fool you, this wonderful resource from Google is applicable to almost any grade level or subject. An extensive resource for art, of course, but also science and history. Come explore an art museum in Prague, a glacier in Alaska or watch a dinosaur come to life. This is appropriate for all age groups.

Google Earth isn’t just for geography (although it IS great for that); it is also wonderful for history, communication arts and science. Come learn how to use this tool in a variety of subjects and grade levels.

Google Admin

Setting up a Google Apps for Education domain is a pretty easy process. The real work comes in customizing the settings to control permissions, security and user settings. This full-day class assumes participants have already requested and been approved for their domain by Google and takes them through the process of everything from adding users to customizing email settings, adding more services and creating resources for your domain to use.

Advanced Google Admin

This class is an add-on to the beginning class. In this session we will learn how to automate some of the more cumbersome processes an administrator faces. We will use several tools including the Google Admin Manager, extensions for Chrome and G Suite Add-ons.

Video

Video Recording

This day-long, hands-on session introduces participants to shooting and editing video with mobile devices. Why buy an expensive camera and editing equipment when you have everything you need in your phone or on your tablet? If you have been thinking about creating instructional videos, podcasts, demos, tutorials or any other types of teaching activities with video, this session is for you. We will discuss and demonstrate tools for shooting and editing video for podcasts, YouTube, screencasts and other uses. We will explore and use tools for converting video between multiple formats, recording and adding audio and where to put your finished products. Examples will be created using Android, iPad and PC recording devices. MOREnet has labs of devices to experiment with, or you can bring your own.

WeVideo is a full-featured online tool for editing video with a simple, easy-to-use interface and creates videos in commonly accepted formats. This session will cover the basics of how to get started with WeVideo and how to use the most common tools for editing your projects.

Zoom and Dacast

MOREnet members have access to two fantastic resources for working with and storing all types of video. This class is a hands-on look at Zoom, an easy-to-use tool for video, videoconferencing and live broadcasting. Participants will learn the features and functions of Zoom then set up and test video in different scenarios. Once the videos are created, we will explore Dacast as a video repository. Learn how to upload and manage videos and users in this clean, easy-to-use interface.

Working With Green Screens

Creating video content for schools and libraries has become mainstream. Recorded lessons, tutorials and even live events are easy to create and enhance learning. Green screens can take the learning even further and provide a great tool for student-generated content, but they can be tricky to set up to achieve your desired effect. This hands-on session looks at how to set up and light your green screen and covers different shooting scenarios for live green screen vs. adding in your background after you shoot in editing software.

Intermediate Circuits With Arduino Controllers

This class will show members how to take the next step in creating electronic circuits. Using Arduino Uno control boards and electronic components, we will learn about specific electronic components like resistors, capacitors, servos and more. We will build the circuits and then connect them to the Arduinos and learn the basics of programming them with the Arduino IDE.

Basics of 3D Design and Printing

3D printing is being used across the curriculum to support learning. Typically, students are not allowed to interact with fragile objects like fossils and artifacts. 3D printing allows students to touch, hold and even take home models. Students can design and print objects from their discussions and reading, as well as use 3D design to support research. We will look at beginning design using Tinkercad, a free online design program, and Blender, which adds elements of visual effects and motion graphics.

Bringing Augmented and Virtual Reality Into the Classroom or Library

See how to turn your tablet into a tool for good instead of evil. Experience how to bring augmented reality (AR) into your classroom and bring a new dimension to many learning activities. AR allows educators to enhance the learning experience through augmenting a traditional ruler. See how to plot coordinates on a 3D plane and then bring those objects to life in your classroom. Science educators can explore the solar system in 3D, show a model of human anatomy or make a virtual prototype and customize its behaviors. Working with electronic components and prototyping circuits can be a daunting task. So many wires and pins, and they all have to be hooked up correctly. With younger learners, this can be really frustrating. This session introduces LittleBits for prototyping circuits. Computer Science

Robotics/Programming for Lower Elementary Learner (Pre K-2)

This hands-on course teaches the basics of robotics and coding for lower elementary students. Multiple tools will be identified and demonstrated, and then participants will be given time to explore and create using different robots and coding resources. This interactive session is geared to help educators and librarians get age-specific coding activities into their classrooms. Participants will be engaged in projects that will showcase essential skills necessary for success in the coding environment: problem-solving, sequential thinking and collaboration.

Introduction to Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi is a small computer that can be used for a variety of projects and has been heralded as a great boon to education and media centers due to its flexibility, simplicity and affordability. The Raspberry Pi also has the unique ability to allow users to develop skills in physical computing, such as wiring, LED lights and sensors. Modules include setting up and imaging an SD card, block and text programming and using some attachments and sensors that add to the Pi’s capabilities. Using Spreadsheets to Teach Coding

This class will present how to use a spreadsheet to teach coding. We will look at formulas and how to insert into cells to return data. We will use formulas to introduce the basics of coding–syntax, errors, returning results from data, etc. This course has the added benefit of students becoming familiar with spreadsheets.

SMART Learning Suite

SMART Learning Suite (Level 1)

This foundational course is designed to introduce participants new to SMART Boards and SMART interactive displays to the features and functionality of these interactive tools. Hands-on exercises will allow participants to practice setting up, customizing and troubleshooting SMART products. We will also learn how to use some of the tools included with your SMART product as well as gain a basic introduction to the SMART Learning Suite.

Enhancing Digital Content

Digital Citizenship and Equity

Educators need to be able to promote learning through technology regardless of being online or face-to-face and need to be confident in the digital citizenship of its young learners. With the increased technology at the fingertips of students, it will be vital to ensure that Internet safety and citizenship are embedded into learning activities. This session will show how to promote digital citizenship in Missouri and what educators and libraries can do to build digital equity for its members. We will also explore resources available to educators, parents and learners to build a foundation for digital citizenship.

Creating good content takes time and thought, but something that is often missing from a lot of content and media is a consideration of all users and how they interact with it.
