Directory Information Exception – What Districts Need to Know

School Yearbook

As we continually receive questions about the directory information exception in regard to educational resource usage, we consulted with the Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC), U.S. Department of Education (Privacy Technical Assistance Center – PTAC), and other resources to create a guide for districts.

The directory information exception is opt-out, and typically used for yearbook and athletic publications.  Once directory information is used in combination with student personally identifiable information (PII), such as student work, it is no longer considered directory information.

Download our one sheet guide to receive information on disclosures, notices, and other considerations. Sources are provided at the bottom of this resource. We encourage districts to research directory information and use this resource as guidance only.
