Title II Web Accessibility Guidelines Deadline Extended

The Department of Justice (DOJ) recognized that many public entities were struggling to meet the original deadline to ensure all digital publications (including apps, webpages, online courses) are WCAG 2.1 compliant.  Effective April 20, 2026, the Interim Final Rule extended compliance dates by a year.  Now large entities (with a population of more than 50,000) is April 26, 2027 and small entities (with a population of less than 50,000) is April 26, 2028.

While this is a welcome extension for many of our members, the digital accessibility expectation is still very much still present.

On-Demand Training:  Digital Accessibility

This asynchronous course is for individuals and organizations who create or manage digital content. It focuses on explaining the standards and processes used to make all digital content more accessible to people with disabilities. You’ll learn how to review existing content, find common accessibility issues, and fix them. We will also discuss working with staff, moving forward, on making all new content accessible, as well as practical ways to meet Title II requirements and align with WCAG 2.1 standards. You can move through the course at your own pace and apply what you learn to real materials you use now.
