How Do You Celebrate World Password Day?

#WorldPasswordDay is May 5, 2022. Every year on the first Thursday in May, we have an opportunity to promote better habits of password settings and security. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) created the use of passwords in 1961 so that multiple people could share the same computer system. Anyone that has an online presence has passwords.

What basic rules can you follow to ensure your password is strong?

  • Use a long password, at least 15 characters, preferably a passphrase. Passphrases are easier to remember and harder to crack.
  • Use a unique password for EACH ACCOUNT. That way, if your account is compromised, the cyber crook won’t have the keys to everything that you log into.
  • Consider using a password manager to generate and keep track of passwords.
  • Add complexity to your password. Substitute letters for special characters and numbers.
  • Change your passwords on a regular basis, especially those with access to sensitive information.
  • Use of two-factor/multi-factor authentication can add another layer of password security.
  • Don’t forget your password-protected devices, peripherals and IoT. Have you changed the default login information?

To celebrate #WorldPasswordDay, you might organize some activities at work, home and in your personal space.

  • Post on social media. Remind others of the importance of good password hygiene.
  • Conduct a training on best practices when choosing a strong password.
  • Consider a password overhaul by checking your devices and online activities. Are you using unique, long and strong passwords?
