Pumping the Brakes on AI

Cybersecurity banner

Artificial Intelligence (AI) news has been exploding in the last couple of weeks. Technology leaders are weighing in with their opinions and recommendations for the continuation of this developing technology. The impact on society is widely debated and argued regarding the affect on the quality of life and future of humanity.
Can we equate the fears of AI application to that of Dolly, the cloned sheep? Were the fears of human cloning overreactive or justified?
And consider the development of IoT (Internet of Things). Significant increases of products for the consumer failed to have any regulation for protecting the security of connected devices. Yet, IoT continues to produce products that automate processes and have a social and technological impact.

Here are some key talking points about AI:

  • Advance AI developments need to meet safety protocols
  • Does AI pose risks to our privacy and jobs?
  • Will AI spew inaccurate information and propaganda?
  • Can AI be weaponized to produce adverse results or threaten our national security?
  • Should we develop non-human minds that could eventually outsmart and outnumber us?
  • Can AI become powerful enough to envelope and take over the human race?
  • What are the potential implications for pausing on this development? Will this give our adversaries a head start?

The employment landscape is projected to remain fluid with jobs both lost and gained as AI is developed to replace tasks, not necessarily jobs. The general population has had a chance to see some of the potential of AI through ChatGPT, Google Bard and Microsoft’s Bing.

There is a call for more research and development to be the refocus in an effort to make systems more accurate, safe, robust and trustworthy. The horse is out of the barn. Is it realistic to think we can rein it back in?
